Ribbon to Buy Edgewater for $110M

Ribbon Communications today announced plans to buy Edgewater Networks for $110 million. The deal, slated to close in the third quarter, is expected to make Ribbon a market leader in enterprise SBCs for businesses of all sizes. It will also supplement Ribbon’s offers in the analytics, cloud, security arenas.

“With Edgewater Networks' strong, sustained growth in recent years and their complementary solutions set, this acquisition makes sense on a number of fronts for Ribbon, allowing them to strengthen their position in enterprise SBCs,” said Diane Myers, senior research director for IHS Markit. “This is a high synergy, low overlap combination that gives Ribbon a broad product line that serves customers of all sizes and can be offered and distributed through multiple channels.”

Ribbon Communications is a global leader in secure real-time communications, providing software, cloud, and network infrastructure solutions to communications service providers and enterprises. It works to transform communications networks, secure communications, and enable cloud communications. A NASDAQ-traded company, Ribbon has 2,300 employees in 27 countries, more than 1,000 service provider and enterprise customers globally, and more than 600 patents.

Edgewater Networks is a 16-year-old, privately-owned company based in San Jose, Calif. It has more than 80 employees, more than 635,000 deployed edge devices, and more than 20 million connected endpoints.

The Edgewater Network Edge Orchestration platform addresses the important new SD-WAN category. SD-WAN has the ability to improve the quality of VoIP and other real-time communications. And real-time communications is an important focus area for Ribbon.

Earlier this month Ribbon held its Perspectives18 event in Los Angeles. While there, it talked about its work with the City of Los Angeles, the Department of Defense, Etisalat UAE, SoftBank, Verizon, and others. The DoD effort represents the largest ever TDM to VoIP transition, according to Ribbon.

At the event, the company talked a lot about its recently introduced Ribbon Protect offering. Ribbon Protect combines firewall, SBC, and intelligence capabilities to identify and guard against bad actors and security threats.
